During Fall 1998 Semester I attended a program called Semester at Sea,circumnavigating the world in 100 days, and visiting 10 countries where Iconducted extensive regional travel, and learned about the country's culture, people, history, economics, and way of life. Semester at Sea, undoubtly, was one of the most enriching and eye-opening experiences of my life.

One of the classes I took on the ship was advanced black & white photography.Click on the countries above to view some of my photos from around the world.

The courses that I took on Semester at Sea were outstanding learning experiences that combined international financial management, politics, geography, marketing, and policy decision making for the ten countries that we visited throughout the semester. We learned the causes and effects of the Asian financial crisis and Japanese banking policies. When we arrived at Japan, we visited the Osaka Stock Exchange. We learned about the capital and currency restrictions and their implications on international trade and currency options markets imposed by Malaysia. We then visited a top Malaysian brokerage house. In Israel we visited the Tel-Aviv Stock Exchange. In Morocco we visited the Goodyear factory, Procter & Gamble factory, and had a panel discussion with the CFO of Exxon, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, and other executives representing subsidiaries of MNCs in those countries. Discussion sessions would always follow with the local authorities and company executives and later in class with the professors. This "hands-on" learning process, along with quantitative and financial analyses, continued around the world and in every one of the ten countries we visited.

Semester at Sea is on the cutting edge of national politics on Spring 1999 Semester voyage by becoming the first large scale group to sail into Havana in 40some years. Semester at Sea held a similar honor when it began largescale group visits to Viet Nam and to mainland China, to name but tworecently opened countries. Forces in Cuba have "outdone" themselves attempting to put the best foot forward. It will be exciting to watch this disembarkation. CNN and GOOD MORNING AMERICA have flown representatives to Cuba to cover the arrival of the S.S. Universe Explorer on Friday morning, February the 19th. Click here to view the CNN article.
